the portion of central Asia that formerly belonged to the Soviet Union and comprised what are now the republics of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan

Note: What is now Kazakhstan was also considered by some to be included in Soviet Central Asia.
